Island Round Table on the Environment and Economy

Island Roundtable Objectives:

The work of the IRTEE will be directed towards the following objectives. The IRTEE may establish strategic priorities from amongst these objectives according to the availability of resources and funding.

 

Objective 1:  IR, Objectives, 1-2
Provide recommendations on environmental, economical and social sustainability and stewardship with respect to specific initiatives or issues.

Rationale: The IRTEE offers a unique, integrative perspective on public and private initiatives for the use and sustainability of Vancouver Island and the surrounding coast. The diverse range of interests reflected in the membership of the IRTEE provides the basis for a balanced viewpoint particular to ongoing issues.

Objective 2:
Review, develop, support and promote policies and initiatives for environmental, economic and social sustainability and stewardship for Vancouver Island and the surrounding coast.

Rationale: A broad base of community support provides the foundation for the IRTEE, encouraging initiatives for sustainability and stewardship while helping to develop guidelines in partnership with existing planning authorities. The diverse range of interests reflected in the membership gives the IRTEE a unique vantage point with respect to long-term planning and management.

 

Objective 3:  IR, Objectives, 3-4
Assist with consensus-based processes for addressing site-specific issues for Vancouver Island and the surrounding coast.

Rational: The IRTEE is in a unique, objective position to assist with the resolution of conflicts pertinent to Vancouver Island and the surrounding coastal region by applying the principles of sustainability and stewardship. Although the IRTEE may decline to get involved in some disputes, advice and expertise could be offered regarding alternative dispute resolution processes.

Objective 4:
Consult with and consider submissions from individuals and organizations on issues and challenges related to sustainability, sustainable development and stewardship.

Rationale: The IRTEE should encourage communities and individuals from throughout the Island and surrounding coastal region to articulate concerns and suggestions regarding sustainability and related issues. The IRTEE can provide a sounding board for proponents of new initiatives, facilitate discussion over local government proposals, and provide a regional forum for all parties to explore the wider implications of local planning and management activities.

 

Objective 5:   IR, Objectives, 5-6
Promote public education and action on the principles of environmental, economic and social sustainability, sustainable development and stewardship for Vancouver Island and the surrounding coast, as well as the roles and responsibilities involved in achieving this goal.

Rationale: The IRTEE should encourage the integration of sustainability principles and processes into formal and informal learning environments.

Objective 6:
Encourage an integrated bioregional and watershed perspective through the inventory, monitoring and assessment of economic, environmental and social systems of Vancouver Island and the surrounding coast.

Rationale: The IRTEE is in a unique position to initiate, encourage and integrate the assessment, inventory, and monitoring of environmental, economic, and social systems for Vancouver Island and the surrounding coast through state of environment reporting, state of sustainability reporting, assessment of carrying capacity, and other techniques. The IRTEE should keep up to date with both recent developments on a local scale and events in other parts of the world as they pertain to Vancouver Island and the surrounding coast.
